Travel Green
Business should adopt corporate policies that encourage:
  1. Telecommuting. If all commuters worked from home just one day a week, America could save 5.85 billion gallons of oil and cut over 65 million metric tons of carbon dioxide each year. Employee Ride Sharing. Carpooling and other forms of ride sharing helps save money, reduce congestion, and cut tailpipe emissions.
  2. Using Public Transit. Employers can help defray the costs of employee mass transit passes.
  3. Flexible Work Hours. Employers should examine employee duty hours and, where feasible, allow employees to arrive and leave during non-rush hours.
  4. Green Business Travel. Employers should encourage employees traveling for business to consider renting hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. In addition, employees should strive to stay in hotels that have been certified by the Green Seal program or that participate in programs such as the Green Hotel Initiative, the Green Hotels Association, the International Hotels Environment Initiative, or other environmental initiatives.
  5. Buying Hybrid or Alternative Fuel Vehicles. If a company owns or operates vehicles, it should consider buying hybrid or alternative fuel vehicles. Hybrid electric vehicles combine traditional combustion engines with rechargeable batteries to improve fuel efficiency and reduce tailpipe emissions while alternative fuel vehicles operate on either conventional gasoline or domestic biofuels like ethanol, reducing our dependence on foreign oil.
