The Twiss Street Solar project is located on a capped landfill in the city of Westfield, Massachusetts. Westfield city officials, along with the local municipal utility, Westfield Gas & Electric, partnered with Citizens Energy to turn the eight-acre property from an environmental liability into an environmental success.
The 2-megawatt (MW) project, built on the flat section at the top of landfill, provides the city of Westfield with lease income and tax revenues and provides savings to Westfield ratepayers on their electricity bills.
The city selected Citizens Energy in a competitive bid process based on our qualifications, track record, and price. A local utility played a critical role and worked closely with Citizens and the city to work out the Power Purchase Agreement arrangements and pass the savings on to local electric accounts. Westfield Gas & Electric also installed the equipment needed to interconnect the solar power to the grid.
The project generates enough electricity to power 250 homes and offset over 2,500 tons of carbon emissions annually.
The Twiss Street Solar site is visible from the city’s transfer station, where local residents deposit their trash, recyclables, and compost. The Twiss Street project shows how a municipality, a local utility, the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and private business can all work together for a positive outcome to benefit all parties.
"This is a good project for Westfield, Westfield Gas and Electric, Citizens Energy and the residents of Westfield. It will provide green energy and we get to distribute it at a reasonable cost.” - Daniel Knapik, Mayor of Westfield
