Citizens Energy Enrolling More Households in Electricity Savings Program Amid Rising Costs and Reduced Assistance

Boston, Mass. – Nonprofit Citizens Energy today announced it is enrolling more residents in its JOE-4-SUN electricity savings program as households face rising costs and cuts to vital assistance programs heading into the colder months. With electric heating costs expected to increase again this year, Citizens is encouraging qualified households in Massachusetts and New York to sign up for their low-income community solar program, JOE-4-SUN, to save on their monthly utility bills.

“Families are doing everything they can to make ends meet as prices rise and household assistance declines,” said Joe Kennedy III, President of Citizens Energy. “Citizens Energy was built for moments like this — when neighbors need a little extra help. Through our JOE-4-SUN program, we’re helping families lower their monthly electricity bills and keep more of their hard-earned dollars for other essentials.”

The JOE-4-SUN program extends the benefits of green energy to low-income families without the need for rooftop solar panels on their home or changing their utility provider. Instead, Citizens Energy develops, finances, constructs, owns and operates utility-scale, ground-mounted solar projects that generate renewable energy and provide steeply reduced electricity costs to communities across the country. Already, the JOE-4-SUN program is providing electric savings to 2,400 households in New York and Massachusetts.

Founded by former U.S. Representative Joseph P. Kennedy II in 1979, Citizens Energy is a non-profit energy company helping Americans afford life’s basic necessities. They have distributed over $600 million in charitable benefits to programs and families in need, and are Massachusetts’ largest low-income community solar developer and operator.

In addition to the JOE-4-SUN program, Citizens Energy provides heating grants to shelters housing homeless individuals and families. Since 1996, the program has awarded over $8.75 million to more than 300 homeless shelters in 17 states, significantly offsetting energy costs and freeing up funds for essential services.
